Treating team

Planning your treatment

The London Gamma Knife Centre at Barts treating team brings together a wide range of skills and roles.

Every patient referred is considered by the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), which comprises clinical oncologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists and physicists, including your own consultant. The team meets twice a month to consider whether patients are suitable for treatment by Gamma Knife and will review all your test results and look at any relevant imaging as well as your level of general health and fitness.

The MDT includes:

• Clinical oncologists - doctors who specialise in radiotherapy treatments and may also prescribe chemotherapy

• Neurosurgeons - who have expert knowledge of conditions of the brain

• Neuroradiologists - doctors who specialise in interpreting PET/CT, CT, MRI scans and other imaging techniques to diagnose and treat disease

• Physicists - scientists with specialist training in the production of Gamma Knife treatment plans

The MDT is fully supported by a team of highly qualified and experienced healthcare professionals, including:

• Therapy radiographer - responsible for the correct delivery of Gamma Knife treatment

• Specialist nurses - who will provide medical support, information and other guidance during treatment

Research Fellows

As part of our commitment to the continuous advancement of the treatment potential of Gamma Knife technology, we benefit considerably from the work of Research Fellows in Barts and The London NHS Trust, who work closely with us. These are neurosurgeons who work more or less full time researching in support of Gamma Knife treatments, in which they are fully experienced.
